Florence School District One – Parent Center

The Florence School District One Parent Center is committed to the belief that "A Parent is a Child’s Most Important Teacher." The Parent Center seeks to engage and involve parents in the education of their children, supporting them in their role as the child’s first teacher.

One of the most comprehensive programs offered at Parent Center is The Parent-Child Home Program. The Parent-Child Home Program is a free, two-year program serving two- and three-year-old children. Trained Home Visitors go see families twice a week. During sessions with the parent and child, the Home Visitor demonstrates parenting techniques and emphasizes verbal interaction and learning through play – using carefully chosen books and toys, which are provided to the family at no cost. Through the program, parents are helped to realize their role as their child’s first and most important teacher, and they experience the joy and value of reading, talking and playing with their children.

Denise Burroughs of Florence, S.C., heard about the Parent Center through a friend and enrolled in the Parent-Child Home Program after her son showed signs of delayed hearing, speech and language skills.

"The program has been a tremendous help and the staff goes above and beyond their job to support you," says Denise. "It helped me with more ways and better ways to teach my son. He no longer has a language barrier."

Denise also enrolled in the GED Preparation classes offered through the center. She and her son successfully completed both programs!
