Kickin’ It

In collaboration with the Department of Juvenile Justice and Law Enforcement, Greenville Family Partnership has developed "Kickin’ It" for at-risk youth in the region. Daniel Brown, Taekwondo Master, joined forces with Stacey Ashmore, Community Outreach, and Troy McBride, CODE Program, to direct the after-school program, made possible by grant funding from the Department of Public Safety.

The program is designed to impact the decision-making skills of impressionable young adults, in addition to helping them manage their anger, develop high levels of self-discipline and understand the value of a positive attitude. Through a series of 15 sessions that engage students for two hours each week, coupled with the Five Tenets of Taekwondo, Kickin’ It provides life skills and alcohol, tobacco and other drugs prevention awareness.

Kickin’ It rewards students for doing well in the program, but extends beyond Taekwondo lessons by providing the youth with an opportunity to make positive changes and connect to their schools and communities.

Referrals for this motivational program are limited to youth, between the ages of 11 and 15, who attend a school or facility at which the program is being offered in Greenville County. Since its inception earlier this year, the program has served approximately 50 Greenville County students.
