Make a Move Project

The Chesterfield County Coordinating Council (CCCC) Health Subcommittee and the CCCC Youth Development Coalition along with other community partners have joined forces to form the Make a Move (MAM) Project.  The collaborative, community-based project works closely with pregnant and parenting teens (19 years of age and younger) in Chesterfield and Marlboro counties to provide health education and parenting resources.

The MAM Project is delivered through group education and/or individual home visits. Individual home visits are customized to meet the needs of the individual but include goal setting and life planning skills. At each fun, free group gathering, participants can talk to medical professionals, certified health educators, social workers and other teen parents to find out more about:

  • What are doctor’s visits all about?
  • Why do I need Medicaid/WIC?
  • Folic acid: Why it’s important.
  • Eating healthy and cheap for you and baby.
  • Do it for your baby: Resisting and help with quitting smoking, drinking and drug use.
  • What is PKU, and why is it important for my baby?

One of MAM’s primary goals is to provide education and resources that alter the likelihood of a second teen pregnancy. The collaborative aims to alleviate the high rate of teen pregnancy and the prevalence of infant mortality, low birth rates, and birth defects associated with teen pregnancy. Through this program, MAM will impact approximately 100 teens annually.
