Birth MattersBirth Matters, a ReGenesis healthcare program, is part of an indispensible doula network that serves pregnant women and their families in southern Spartanburg County. The community-based program provides free services and support to pregnant youth, 20-years old and younger, and positively impacts the growth and development of newborns. Birth Matters’ vision is “to empower women to make positive generational changes for themselves and their children through education, attachment parenting and good medical care choices for self and child.” In an effort to bring that vision into fruition, the program currently offers a team of 10 trained doulas who are also residents of the communities they serve. These professional and personal advocates facilitate each phase of the birthing process and provide continued support and educational resources to the mother and her family after birth and during the transition into parenthood. The Birth Matters program is patterned after the Doula Model established by the Chicago-based organization Health Connect One. The model addresses the important role culture plays in the context of childbirth and builds strong niches in communities where women with similar needs and experiences can empower and support each other. In October 2009, Birth Matters began offering a 20-week community-based doula training session to young women residing in the southern region of Spartanburg County.
