Aiken Youth Empowerment

Aiken Youth Empowerment

Founded in 1994, the Aiken County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Council (ACTPPC) was established through a community partnership among public institutions and private citizens. The council’s leaders are from diverse backgrounds, but they share the commonality of genuine concern for teens in the Aiken community.

Aiken Youth Empowerment's mission is to educate and increase awareness among youth, their families and other caring adults and to promote behaviors that lead to positive health outcomes. They are committed to providing a solid foundation upon which youth can build promising futures by preventing teen pregnancies and promoting abstinence. The organization believes that the young people in our community are the future, and that belief propels their vision. Through signature programs like “Positive Outcomes,” and “Real Talk for Youth,” teens have access to regular STD/HIV testing and family planning, and receive individual educational counseling when they visit the Aiken County Health Department for pregnancy testing.

In alignment with its guiding principles, Aiken Youth Empowerment also engages parents in their outreach efforts. The Parent Power program empowers parents to be the primary sex/sexuality educators for their children. The program also includes bi-lingual and multicultural resource books and DVDs that are available at the Aiken and Nancy Carson Libraries. Additionally, age-appropriate workshops are conducted at churches, worksites, schools and other community organizations.

Other council initiatives include the Annual Mother-Daughter Luncheon, Stewards of Children Workshops and quarterly e-newsletters.
