What to expect at your well-women visit:

What to expect at your well-women visit:
When you first arrive at the doctor’s office you will be asked to fill out some forms while you are in the waiting room. These forms will ask you questions about any illness or conditions that you may have and any habits you have (if you drink or smoke), any previous pregnancies, and your family’s health history. You may also be asked for the date of your last period.

When you are in the exam room the nurse or doctor will go over the forms that you have filled out. The nurse will also check your height, weight, and blood pressure will be checked, you may need to give the nurse a blood and/or a urine sample.  A sexual health history and a physical exam will be performed. You will also be checked for any health problems you may have.  The doctor will then do the following exams:

Breast Exam - Your doctor may check your breasts for growth and signs of any problems such as a lump. You will also be shown how to examine your breasts at home.

Pelvic Exam - Depending on your age, you may or may not have a pelvic exam during your first visit. If you have had sex or are having any problems, a pelvic exam may be needed.

Pap test - A screening test for the early detection of cervical cancer and is recommended every 1 to 3 years. More frequent pap tests are recommended for women who have had certain types of abnormal pap smears or treatment for an abnormal pap.

When the exam is over the doctor will talk with you.  This is a good time to ask questions if you did not ask them before. Don’t be afraid to ask any question, this is the best time to ask and remember your discussions with your doctor and nurses are confidential.
