First Choice Kids is a free health plan provided by Select Health of South Carolina as part of Healthy Connections Kids. Healthy Connections Kids is new a program for the children of working families. The program is designed to provide health insurance for children whose family earns too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford a private health insurance plan.
Eligibility
SC DHHS determines eligibility for the Healthy Connections/First Choice Kids program. In general, children may qualify for the program if they:
- Are legal U.S. citizens and residents of South Carolina
- Have a Social Security card, or the family agrees to apply for the card
- The family’s countable resources (such as cash and money in bank accounts) total $30,000 or less
- Are under 19 years of age
- Don’t have comprehensive health coverage
- Have been uninsured for three months unless their health coverage was involuntarily dropped
In addition, the child’s family must also meet specific income guidelines.
