Healthy Hoops Challenge Brings Asthma Education and Awareness to Community

Event Supports Asthma Awareness Month

April 01, 2009
Greenville, SC

While the month of May brings the welcome arrival of warmer weather, it also brings many unwelcome allergies that can make it hard to breathe, especially for those that suffer from asthma.   As National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, May is a time to spread the word about effective asthma management.  Select Health of South Carolina is doing its part to teach children and their families in the Greenville area how to control asthma through appropriate medication, proper nutrition, monitored exercise and recreational activities with the Healthy Hoops Upstate Challenge.

The Healthy Hoops Upstate Challenge will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 9 at the Caine Halter Family YMCA located at 721 Cleveland Street in Greenville.   The Upstate Challenge is a fun-filled day of asthma education, health screenings and basketball lessons for children ages 7 to 15 and their families.  Camp participants will receive basketball instruction from Clemson University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Oliver Purnell, Southern Wesleyan University Head Women’s Basketball Coach LaCheryl Smith and other basketball pros. Participants will also enjoy live entertainment and an awards ceremony. Lunch will be provided.

The challenge is sponsored by Select Health of South Carolina, Caine Halter Family YMCA, the South Carolina Asthma Alliance, AmeriHealth Mercy and the Healthy Hoops Coalition, which includes a host of community partners. Space is still available for asthmatic children to participate, however, children must receive a health screening first. For more information and to register, call 1.866.HOOPS.SC.
