Healthy Hoops Participants Seek Relief From Summer HeatCremins to headline all-day basketball camp at new Carolina First ArenaJune 22, 2009 Charleston, SC The intense summer heat is already upon us, making it hard to enjoy many traditional outdoor summer activities. For those suffering from asthma, the heat and humidity can be even tougher to handle. To help prevent some of these summertime blues, Select Health of South Carolina, along with College of Charleston Head Men's Basketball Coach Bobby Cremins, will be hosting the third annual Healthy Hoops Charleston Challenge, to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 18 in the brand new Carolina First Arena, located at 301 Meeting Street in downtown Charleston. Cremins, along with Jermel President, a former College of Charleston stand-out, is taking part in the Healthy Hoops Charleston Challenge to help children with asthma stay active. The challenge is a fun-filled free event that features basketball lessons, health screenings and asthma education for children ages seven to 15 years old, and their families. Participants will also enjoy live entertainment and an awards ceremony. Lunch will be provided. Sponsored by Select Health of South Carolina, the South Carolina Asthma Alliance, AmeriHealth Mercy and the Healthy Hoops Coalition, which includes a host of community partners, the Charleston Challenge will use basketball as a platform to teach participants and their families how to manage asthma through appropriate medication usage, proper nutrition, monitored exercise and recreational activities. Space is still available for asthmatic children to participate in the Charleston Challenge. However, children must receive a health screening first.
