Select Health to Sponsor Dawn Staley Grandparents BreakfastBasketball Star Dawn Staley to Host Breakfast Celebrating Grandparents Raising Their GrandchildrenNovember 13, 2009 Columbia, SC Grandparents wear many hats. They are supporters, motivators, companions, and perhaps most importantly, friends. But for some, they are also parents. To honor those grandparents who are solely responsible for raising their grandchildren, three-time Olympian and basketball stand-out Dawn Staley is hosting the second annual Dawn Staley Grandparents Breakfast, to be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 5 at the Brookland Baptist Church Banquet and Conference Center, 1066 Sunset Blvd. in West Columbia. The luncheon is held each year to recognize those grandparents who take on the selfless responsibility of raising their grandchildren. The grandparents, who will represent various parts of the state, were nominated by the AARP, local churches, and other community organizations. Special dignitaries and celebrities will be on hand for the breakfast, which will be exercise and fitness-themed and will include theme-oriented gifts and surprises. Dawn Staley was hired as the University of South Carolina Head Women’s Basketball Coach in May 2008. Prior to her hire, she led her native Philadelphia Temple University’s Lady Owls to an impressive 178-80 overall record in just eight short years. In her professional basketball career, she made five appearances at the WNBA All-Star game and was named to the WNBA’s All-Decade Team. Upon retirement, the WNBA named their community award The Dawn Staley Community Award in her honor. Staley owns three Olympic gold medals and is considered one of the most decorated female basketball players in the history of the sport. In addition to her basketball career, she heads the Dawn Staley Foundation, which focuses on enriching the lives of youth. About Select Health |
