Over 60 Grandparents Recognized at Dawn Staley Grandparents Breakfast
Columbia, SC

Over 60 grandparents from around the state were honored recently at the Dawn Staley Grandparents Breakfast, a celebration to honor those grandparents who are solely responsible for raising their grandchildren.  The breakfast, which took place at Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia, is held each year by three-time Olympian and basketball stand-out Dawn Staley to honor those grandparents who take on this selfless responsibility. The grandparents were nominated by those in their local community, including through the AARP, local churches and other community organizations.

Sponsored by Select Health of South Carolina, this year’s event was exercise-themed, and grandparents enjoyed receiving exercise-themed gifts such as weights, resistance bands, fitness ball, workout t-shirts and sweatshirts, as well as four tickets to a USC Women’s Basketball game and 25 gold plated dollars to spend only on themselves.  The event also included entertainment, guest speakers, and appearances by other local dignitaries.

Dawn Staley was hired as the University of South Carolina Head Women’s Basketball Coach in May 2008.  Prior to her hire, she led her native Philadelphia Temple University’s Lady Owls to an impressive 178-80 overall record in just eight short years.  In her professional basketball career, she made five appearances at the WNBA All-Star game and was named to the WNBA’s All-Decade Team.  Upon retirement, the WNBA named their community award The Dawn Staley Community Award in her honor.  Staley owns three Olympic gold medals and is considered one of the most decorated female basketball players in the history of the sport.  In addition to her basketball career, she heads the Dawn Staley Foundation, which focuses on enriching the lives of youth.
