Nearly a year after the grand opening of its new facility, the Lowcountry Food Bank recently recognized Select Health for its support of the organization’s Growing Forward Capital Campaign.

During a surprise presentation, Lowcountry Food Bank Executive Director, D. Jermaine Husser and several staff members presented Select Health President and CEO, Michael Jernigan with a signed photograph of the Paul Hulsey Community Food and Nutrition Center.

“You gave of your time when nobody else believed that we could raise $5 million,” said Hussser. “We know that we could never repay you for your support and friendship but we wanted to give you a small token of appreciation for helping us achieve our dream of getting a new home.”

Select Health, under Jernigan’s leadership, was one of the first contributors to support the Lowcountry Food Bank’s Growing Forward Capital Campaign─ a multi-million dollar fundraising initiative launched in 2005 to help the food bank relocate and expand its mission. Jernigan helped raised more than $2.7 million for the Food Bank during his term as campaign chairman.

“I certainly believe in the work of the food bank and applaud the impact the organization has had on the state and the lowcountry,” said Jernigan.  “I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

The Lowcountry Food Bank was founded in 1983 as a clearinghouse for donated food items. Its mission is to feed the hungry in the ten coastal counties of South Carolina. Select Health’s and the Food Bank’s missions are similar in terms of helping the underserved.
