Healthy Moms and Babies Program Featured in Industry Video

Select Health's case management program recognized as a best practice

July 25, 2011
Charleston, SC

Select Health of South Carolina's Healthy Moms and Babies program was chosen by Medicaid Health Plans of America (MHPA) Center for Best Practices to be featured in its "Keeping You Healthy" video series. Each month, MHPA highlights a best practice from a Medicaid health plan that impacts the lives of the individuals they serve. MHPA is the leading trade association solely focused on representing Medicaid health plans. Select Health's Medicaid health plan, First Choice, serves more than 217,000 members throughout South Carolina.

"We are honored to see Healthy Moms and Babies distinguished as a best practice," said Cindy Helling, executive director of Select Health of South Carolina. "Infant mortality and premature birth have plagued our state for far too long. The women enrolled in Healthy Moms and Babies are getting the help and support needed to deliver full-term, healthy babies, and that's a health outcome we can all celebrate."

Select Health started Healthy Moms and Babies 10 years ago as a way to improve birth outcomes and reduce the incidence of pregnancy related complications among its members. Since then, it has matured into a fully-integrated program that supports members throughout pregnancy and ends after a child's first birthday. A team of Healthy Moms and Babies case management nurses guide members through every aspect of prenatal and postpartum care. This often includes education about nutrition during pregnancy and the importance of flu shots. Members also receive information about what to expect in the newborn nursery or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and how best to transition from hospital to home with an infant.

Whether it is helping moms find a pediatrician or reminding them of the vaccine schedule and well-visits, Healthy Moms and Babies case management nurses continue to provide assistance throughout the baby’s first year of life.

"Healthy Moms and Babies is fully aligned with our mission," said Helling. "The program helps our pregnant members get care, stay well and is certainly building a healthier South Carolina community."
