Summerville to Host 2011 Health Ministry Empowerment TourEvent to feature award-winning health reporter and anchor Carolyn MurrayOctober 10, 2011
The 2011 Health Ministry Empowerment Tour will come to Summerville Saturday, Oct. 22, with TV news anchor Carolyn Murray headlining a day of free inspiring and informative workshops for women with the overall theme, “Mind, Body, Spirit: Bringing the Good News.” Select Health of South Carolina and IMARA Woman magazine have joined together once again to sponsor the popular Health Ministry Empowerment Tour. “Women in Summerville and the greater Charleston area should grab their friends and make plans to attend because this is an event you don’t want to miss,” said Toni Parnell, Select Health’s call center supervisor and member of Summerville’s Health Ministry Empowerment Tour’s Steering Committee. “From free health screenings to healthy cooking demonstrations to parenting tips, this event brings important topics to our community in a fun way that will leaving everyone who attends empowered and inspired.” The free event will run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Summerville High School and includes an array of health screenings, exhibits and workshops, such as the ABCs of Diabetes, Social Networking Unwrapped and Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number! A complimentary lunch will include a fashion show and entertainment as well as Murray as the guest speaker. An anchor and reporter for WCBD TV (Channel 2) in Charleston, Murray has received many awards for consumer and medical reporting, including coverage of women’s health issues. She personally has shown viewers the simplicity of being tested for heart disease and asthma as well as receiving a mammogram. After losing a grandmother to diabetes, she became involved with diabetes awareness campaigns, and she has led 5Ks and other events to promote heart health. Her volunteer work also includes several literacy initiatives. She is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and Charleston’s Burke High School.
