Select Health Named a Best Place to Work in South Carolina for 13th Consecutive Year

August 21, 2020 - North Charleston, S.C.

North Charleston, S.C. – A comprehensive wellness program, robust employee benefits and a strong mission and vision have helped Select Health of South Carolina rank as one of the Best Places to Work in South Carolina for the 13th consecutive year. The rankings, now in the 15th year, are conducted and administered by SC Biz News, the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, and Best Companies Group.

Select Health, the state’s oldest and largest Medicaid managed care organization, and a member of the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, offers the First Choice Medicaid health plan statewide and the First Choice VIP Care Plus Medicare-Medicaid plan in 42 counties.

“Receiving this honor for the 13th consecutive year is a testament to Select Health’s commitment to our associates and their passion for the work we do,” said Courtnay Thompson, market president for Select Health.

“Our most valuable resource is our people. I am proud to lead more than 550 associates throughout the state, who truly believe in our mission to help South Carolinians get care, stay well and build healthy communities. Our vision is to be a leader in empowering those in need, especially the poor and the disabled, across their full life journey, from wellness to resilience, in order for South Carolinians to achieve their American Dream.”

Select Health associates receive benefits, such as a flexible paid time off policy, tuition and healthy lifestyle reimbursement programs, an employee referral program, adoption assistance, and personal and professional development offerings Our health heroes, FIT Boy and FIT Girl, return to First Choice Fit this year after last year’s debut. They help children stay healthy while fighting off germs, and get couch potatoes to be more active.

Members can follow along with their adventures in activity books and games. Kids can commit to being First Choice Fit by eating healthy food, staying active, and getting their annual well visits. They can even show their pride by posting a selfie of themselves being healthy with #FirstChoiceFit, with their parent or guardian’s permission.

“Healthcare organizations and health plans, like ours at Select Health and the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, know the value of associate engagement and satisfaction,” said Deonys de Cárdenas, First Choice VIP Care Plus Plan Lead. “Making employees happier and creating good will is the right thing to do. In addition, studies show that it’s also helping organizations deliver on customer-focused and value-based care goals. That’s a win-win for everybody.”

Volunteerism, both during and outside of operating hours, is strongly encouraged and supported at Select Health. It partners with local organizations, including Be A Mentor, Helping And Lending Outreach Support (HALOS), Dragon Boat Charleston, Ronald McDonald House Charities Charleston, Lowcountry Orphan Relief and other charitable initiatives. Through Care Crew, the company volunteer program, associates gain a sense of accomplishment in the community, and the motivation to continue making a difference.

Associates regularly take part in community service projects, including Trident United Way’s Day of Caring and numerous local fundraising initiatives, such as walk/runs that benefit the March of Dimes March for Babies, the American Heart Association Heart Walk and the American Lung Association LUNG FORCE. Activities are promoted and managed through an award-winning Employee Activity Committee (EAC), which consists of volunteers who organize on- and off-site activities year-round.

“This award reflects the quality of the programs and services we offer our associates, and it helps us recruit talented people seeking a workplace where they can flourish, while feeling genuinely appreciated by their employer,” said Pete Knight, senior HR business partner and EAC member.

During the award application process, Select Health associates identified a number of key examples that define the health plan as a place where people want to work. Recurring responses included: affinity for the plan’s mission and vision; company culture supporting a friendly, positive, caring, diverse and creative work environment; wellness programs; career advancement opportunities; recognition; ongoing training; open door policy; EAC; Care Crew volunteer opportunities; salary and benefits package; and incentive programs.
