Select Health and its First Choice Medicaid Plan to Host Community Action Poverty Simulation
Select Health of South Carolina, the state’s oldest and largest Medicaid managed care organization and part of the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, will host a special simulation to help its associates and community partners better understand the impact of poverty on daily living.
The camps are offered free of charge to all participants. First Choice Fit camps also feature a community health fair open to the public with no cost to attend. Health screenings will also be offered as part of the camps.
During a three-hour exercise, approximately 80 participants will assume the roles of low-income family members living on a limited budget. Together, family members and neighbors are given the challenge of providing for their basic necessities and shelter for one month with the funds they are given. At the end of the simulation, participants will share their experiences and discuss ideas to tackle socioeconomic barriers to achieving health, wellness, and overall quality of life.
First Choice by Select Health of South Carolina has helped South Carolina children stay healthy for more than 20 years. Since 2013, we have made fitness fun with First Choice Fit. This program has helped hundreds of young First Choice members and South Carolina kids improve their health through education and fun activities. Being First Choice Fit means eating right, being active, and seeing your doctor — even if you have not been sick. This year, there are more fun programs and events than ever to help South Carolina’s kids be First Choice Fit.
This event takes place during the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies Diversity and Inclusion Week scheduled from April 22 – 26.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Media are welcome to observe and cover the event for their outlets. However, Select Health has also reserved a limited number of spots for any media wishing to participate in the simulation.

According to that same source, Charleston has a poverty rate of 13.1 percent. Select Health will apply lessons learned from this experience to help shape associates’ understanding of the many challenges facing South Carolina citizens.
