Healthy Hoops Participants Gear Up For Summer ChallengeParticipant Registration for Basketball Clinic is Still AvailableMay 28, 2008 Charleston, SC The basketball players that come under the guidance of Bobby Cremins, Head Coach of Men's Basketball at the College of Charleston, are usually six foot in height or taller. But, when Cremins hosts a basketball clinic for players next month, this won't be the case. He will be coaching basketball players who are much shorter, younger, and who have been diagnosed with asthma. Cremins, along with Jermel President, a former College of Charleston stand-out, is taking part in the Healthy Hoops Charleston Challenge to help children with asthma stay active. The challenge – held from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 14 at Burke High School located at 244 President Street – is a fun-filled free event that features basketball lessons, health screenings and asthma education for children ages seven to 15 years old, and their families. Sponsored by Select Health of South Carolina, the South Carolina Asthma Alliance, Schering-Plough, AmeriHealth Mercy and the Healthy Hoops Coalition which includes a host of community partners, the Charleston Challenge will use basketball as a platform to teach participants and their families how to manage asthma through appropriate medication usage, proper nutrition, monitored exercise and recreational activities. Participants will also enjoy live entertainment and an awards ceremony. Lunch will also be provided. Space is still available for asthmatic children to participate in the Charleston Challenge. However, children must receive a health screening first. For more information and to register, call 1.866.HOOPS.SC.
